Northumberland's boys and girls have earned an historic first County Cup 9U win in their North-East age group. The team of 4 boys and 4 girls overcame strong opposition, beating a very strong Yorkshire team 5-4 to set up a victory.
The team featured Kouros Anssaridazeh, Paige Charlton, Oliver Clark, Aimee Knowles, Teddy Prisadnikova, Luke Thompson, Lily May Tod and Reuben Webster. In beating Yorkshire, Cumbria and Durham & Cleveland, the players road through numerous tight, three-set matches, to earn the crucial victories which secured their winners' medals.
The standard of tennis, attitude of the players and support from family was exemplary.
James Newman, who captained the team said: 'It is always tough with Yorkshire in the group, they are a huge county with so much talent to choose from, so managing to beat them 5-4 gave us a lot of confidence going into the last two ties. Having said that, the players never backed off, they kept playing the strong tennis they have played over the past year and underlined that this group of 9 and 10 year old's is a match for any county in GB'.
9U County Cup is organised into 8 regional groups of 4 or 5 teams.
